Pictures from the past

With the help of my Aunt Carol (my mom's sister), I recently had the pleasure of reuniting with my Uncle Steve...my mother's younger brother. He lived with us for a short period of time when I was younger, then moved to Arizona (where my mom was from) and took care of my grandparents. He was kind enough to send me some pictures of relatives I never got to know, some still living, some that have passed away. The one I love is actually of my family (not pictured are my father and my yet unborn brother Shawn):
That's my Uncle Steve, my half sister Brenda, my brother Shane, Mom, me, half sister Donna, and my brother Shad. I was probably 5 in this picture. Too bad I can't get away with hot pants like that now!
Love ya Aunt Carol and Uncle Steve!

Waiting for the Abominable Snowman....

There is a pseudo- "blizzard" rushing through the Portland area right now. It's probably the closest thing to a blizzard we will ever see around here. I am perfectly happy staying in my PJs all day long, sipping a warm chai latte, surfing the net, catching up on my DVR programs, and being plain-ass lazy. :) Meanwhile, from the time we got up at 7:30 this morning until noon, Glen was very antsy...he ended up shoveling the walkway, chopping wood, and anything else to keep himself busy. We are polar opposites when it comes to this! So around 1:00, he drove over to his sister's boyfriend's house to, of all things, play Rock Band. It's now 5:30, and we've gained probably 4 inches of snow since he left! I hope he can get home safely.

On baby-making news, nothing to report, except I am at cycle day 29 with no signs of ovulation. :( My average ov day is day 16, so obviously, I am very behind! I am learning a lot about my own body, so that is the best part about the temping/charting/testing. For several months, I have questioned myself as to whether I really want to have a baby now, or if I just like the idea of having a baby. I cried when I tested negative last month. I guess I'm ready!

We just found out that good friends of ours in California who had a very difficult time getting pregnant the first time (and were successful in 2006!) have just found out they are pregnant again! We are so happy for them. If anything, I have learned from several friends not to worry too much...patience, though difficult, actually is a virtue!

I'm in the middle of my 7th week (4th set) of invisalign braces...they are better than I thought they would be! I am starting to notice my top teeth getting straighter and my bottoms feel less crowded when I floss. This is cool.

Unwanted Vacation

I only worked one day this week. Thanks to bursts of snow and ice in the mornings , schools overreact and close, then the snow melts by afternoon...they cancel, our clinic closes=no work for Stacia. Instead, if I want to pay my mortgage, I get to use my PTO hours to make up for hours of lost work. Not counting Christmas day, New Year's day, and the day after both of those. 64 hours total. Merry Christmas to me.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

Four inches: on our patio set UNDER the deck cover. Leave it to those lovely Easterly Gorge Winds to whirl and whip the snow around to any/everywhere. It's hilarious how Portland practically shuts down when this kind of weather arrives. Our clinic shuts down when the local school district cancels school, so I get a snow day home from work tomorrow. The higher-ups say they don't want our patients risking their safety to make it to a non-emergency medical treatment, but it's obvious that they don't want to pay to keep the doors open, especially when in all reality most patients will cancel anyway. Good thing I had some vacation saved up. I'd rather use it for a REAL vacation, though. Or maternity leave when that time comes.

Tech LOVES the snow...he even played "ball" with it. It took him a few times to realize that this time he could actually EAT the ball.

Last week, we got up early on Saturday to catch a few sales at Macy's in downtown Portland...it's funny, but around the holidays, the REALLY interesting people come out of the woodwork. Thank heaven I have a steady job, because I would starve to death trying to make a living being an entertainer:

(I was ready for him to pull out the Michael Jackson glove, but never saw it. :)

That day, we also drove out to Sandy to pick out a tree. Reindeer Tech helped me to decorate it:

And my lovely husband kindly cleaned up.......(it's ok to be jealous!)

I'm a new aunt!

As of December 3rd, I am an aunt for the umpteenth time...I've lost count, simply because I have 3 older 1/2 sisters who have mutliple children. I am a full-blooded aunt to 4 now. :) Her name is Brooke Lauren. It's a beautiful name that I would love even more if part of it weren't OUR name. Lauren is the name that Glen and I have had picked out for our first daughter since before we even got married. They picked it out 4 months ago. Now it's going to my "No" name list. Sad day. I feel a bit guilty about my resentment, but bite me. That's what I get for being the oldest child and the last to have one of my own.

A Sad Story

http://www.mattlogelin.com/if-you-havent-been-here-before/

That's the blog my eyes have been glued to for over a week now. I've officially read the whole thing from start to finish. It's not an easy read, considering the subject material, the author's creative shortening of sentences, his constant use of "the" in front of the name of every geographical place he mentions....but it's worth the read. Be forewarned, it is sad. I have cried many a tear reading about his thoughts and experiences since losing his wife the day after their first daughter was born. Take a look---it has allowed me to really enjoy every moment I have with the one I love--I think you'll feel the same.

Turkey Day

I just wanted to wish a very happy Thanksgiving to all of my family, friends, and anyone else who may peruse my blog...I am very thankful for those in my life who have become surrogate family, those whom I have reunited with from days past, and even those who haven't been so present in my life lately. As I grow older, I feel and understand the meaning of Thanksgiving more and more. It's not just the yummy pecan pie from my southern roots or watching the Cowboys play (even when they really suck)...it's remembering why we live, who we live for, and how we get through each day. Happy Thanksgiving!

I have gotten a few very supportive comments about my last post...THANK YOU. I don't always have interesting things to share, but it makes my heart warm over to know that I have friends who care enough not only to read my blog, but to comfort me when I need it.

On a happier note, I finished my first set of Invisalign trays today! I just started my 2nd set (start of the 3rd week), and boy, is there a difference! I hadn't realized just how used to the first set I was. I took some Aleve and am getting ready to go pass out and sleep through the initial shock of the new set. I got over the mouth sensitivity after about 6-7 days of the first set, so that's no longer a problem. I even got to the point of sometimes forgetting I had them in! I am very satisfied thus far.

Absent mother, long vent

I have the day off today after a 6-day work week that ended Saturday. I'm having trouble prying my lazy ass off of the couch...not feeling so hot. Kind of negates the whole day off.

I finally talked to my mom lastnight after 5 months of silence. Oh, she called while we were in Mexico in August to wish me a happy birthday, but I left my phone at home. She got some credit for that, but in turn, never returned the 3 messages I left BEFORE her phone got disconnected. Or should I say before she neglected to pay her phone bill? Yes, you could say I am very bitter. This is a pattern that keeps repeating itself. We had an hour-long conversation that had undertones of her trying to sugarcoat things in order to make up for never calling me back. Apparently, she also moved (and did not tell me) and no longer had a phone. I found out through my half-sister Brenda about this. Brenda offered to let my mom use her phone to call me, and she turned it down. And when she called lastnight, it was with the cell phone of a friend of a friend of mom's stepson. If you're confused, you're not alone. I am lost.

My youngest brother Shawn and his girlfriend Sarah are expecting a baby within 2-3 weeks. Mom was bubbling over with excitement (as she should be), and explains that she doesn't have a job (and hasn't had one in 2 months) because she's waiting for the baby to arrive so she can move in temporarily with them and help out. What? It takes me back to the day when she told me that since I'm the one who moved away from my family, I get the luxury of her either being at my wedding or at the birth of my first child, not both. It came down to a week before the wedding, and she had not saved any money (over the 16 months she could have) to be able to come to Portland to see her only daughter get married. Apparently, the cigarette stash was low and took priority. To save myself from the embarassment, I reluctantly bought her a bus ticket, and my in-laws paid for her motel stay. You bet your ass I'm not paying for her to be present at the birth of my first child when that comes. I've shed too many tears hoping that she will grow a heart bigger than the size of a grain of sand. She will be the one missing out. I have adopted a new family that actually welcomes me, supports me, protects me, and nourishes me. Who says blood is thinner than water?

Boy, being off the pill really screws with my hormones.

No O

Cycle day 18 and still no ovulation....I'm starting to wonder if my cycles won't be as regular after BCP as I had hoped. :( No panicking yet, though.

My Invisalign diet: I need more lemons!

I've graduated from tomato soup and grilled cheese to crab cakes....much else, I can't chew. To be honest, I can handle ripened bananas, berries, yogurt. Perhaps I need to ask Jenny for a few of her baby food puree recipes. :) But those lemon drop martinis I had lastnight went down really easy. We went to Portland City Grill lastnight for an Oregon Physical Therapist Association fundraising event, and I made sure to replace calories lost from food with a glass of white wine and 2 martinis. Afterward, we and our friends Jeff, Megan #1, Ernie, and Megan #2 stopped by Voodoo Doughnuts to satisfy Glen's craving. They are known for their bacon maple bars (that's right....I nice maple bar slathered with a couple of strips of greasy, crispy bacon) and a variety of other ones (click on the link!).
Then we went to Paddy's for a nightcap...and home by 11:00! We just can't handle the late nights that we used to. Papa Rod took in puppydog Tech for the night (because, truly he really does have a soft spot for his pseudo-grandchild until we can give him a real one). I have a feeling it won't be so easy with one that doesn't play fetch, sit, stay, and go potty on command....

First day of Invisalign

I got my "attachments" and first set of invisalign trays today. They HURT....but I've only had them in for 4 hours. I hear they get better after 1-2 days. I wear each set for 2 weeks, so that means when I put on each new set I get to look forward to this mighty painful initial adjustment.

The attachments I mentioned are little buttons of tooth-colored enamel that are attached to certain teeth that need to be rotated. My trays have indentions to catch these buttons in order to provide that rotation. I tried to take pictures of them, but our camera *sucks*.

So I can only have water while the trays are in; otherwise, I have to take the trays out to eat and then brush/floss/rinse/reinsert trays...EVERY time I want to eat something. Tonight I took the trays out after about 1.5 hours in, tried to eat soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. Uh, yeah, not so great. I have 4 of those attachments on my bottom teeth, and due to the overjet/overbite I have, I can't fully bite down because my top teeth hit those buttons on my bottom teeth. Looks like the "invisalign diet" is off to a great start. I'll be sipping soup for a while! Not to mention the pain I felt with trying to put the trays back in after eating...(those little attachments are a pain in my ass!)

Oh! I forgot to mention the sanding of my teeth that I got to enjoy today as well...the dentist took a thin piece of metal that serves as sandpaper to reduce the width of some of my crowded teeth and allow room for them to shift. It felt like what hearing nails down a chalkboard sounds like.

This better work! (and if I could lose about 10 pounds, that would be great, too!)

Woohoooo! I didn't think it would happen...but they pulled through. Go Tech!

Holy Mustache

One month down (last week)....here's to hoping all of my cycles off the pill are as normal as this one was! (I do know the odds of that are not that great.) I'm still trying to lose a few last pounds before REALLY trying, but if it happens, it happens.

For work today, Glen dressed up as Steve Prefontaine (famous U of O runner back in the 70s)---except with a curly wig and without the gigantic sideburns. He even shaved off his goatee and left a mustache. Who woulda thought Mr. Oregon State Beavers would imitate a former Duck on Halloween? Pics to come later.

Right now I'm between trick-or-treaters (it's a little slow this year), but I am highly impressed by the manners that they all have. I'm hearing "thank you's" from almost every single child. And except for the adults who are dressed up and saying "I'm doing this for the baby", I'm really enjoying it. Granted, I guess I just don't understand because I'm not a mom yet, but couldn't they at least dress up the baby and trick-or-treat? Nevertheless, this is one of my favorite holidays because the kiddos are just stinkin' cute. Including the big kiddo that sleeps in my bed.

The Rain arrived, along with ovulation

Yep, I said it. If you're too sheepish to hear me talk about my cycle, then this is not the place for you. :) I ended up ovulating right on time at CD 16: woo-hoo! Today is CD 24, temps are all running above coverline as expected during the luteal phase...(I really do sound like a dork by now)....now I'm just waiting to see when exactly AF shows up. We were (or I should say I was) trying to avoid conceiving this month so that I can figure out my cycle (without bcp). I am blessed at this point to see that everything is going normally SO FAR. I know it takes more than one cycle to figure yourself out.

On another note, the fall/winter rains have arrived, though not in full force. The leaves are still turning from green to orange/yellow/red, which I LOVE about the Pacific northwest. In Texas, one day it's summer and 100 degrees out, the next it's 40 degrees, windy, and icy. No autumnal change at all! Plus, here, my geraniums are still alive!

While I'm feeling a bit rambly today, one more topic: colleagues at work who are so insecure about themselves that they make a point to act like they know EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING. There is a particular person in my clinic who is in her late 40s, never went to college, and is in charge of billing. She is a mostly nice woman who HATES working under therapists who are in their 20s (who have masters and doctorate degrees). So she goes out of her way to root her nose into every conversation (even those that are therapist-related, involving patient care tactics, or how to use a certain piece of medical equipment) to tell everyone what should be done. Don't get me wrong, we all TRY to treat her with the upmost respect, and there is no segregation between office staff and therapists. She just really got on my nerves today, so thanks for the vent. :)

Pancakes in a can

Yep, you read me right. Pancake batter in a can. My husband's new love. I have to admit, they aren't half bad. A little too salty for my taste, but hey, he can actually make them on his own without giving me the "could you make me some of your yummy pancakes?" face. Normally, I'd be a tad offended that he didn't want my cooking, but this is awesome. I get to stew in my "not a morning person" groggy mood.

Tidbits of everything

FYI: Any guys reading this post may want to skip the first paragraph. Don't say I didn't warn you!
So this is my first cycle off the pill. CD 16. Still not sure if I've ovulated yet. I know there's the likelihood of having a few haphazard, nonsensical cycles, and frankly, I'm scared! Of course, I do realize that, despite the old wives tale of ovulation occuring on the 14th cycle day, some women ovulate as early as day 8-9 or as late as 50-60. There's no way to know unless you chart. Speaking of charting, tracking my temps daily is getting easier (they say it takes 21 days for something to become habit). I'm hoping that today I'm ovulating, so that these cramps and feeling 10 pounds heavier would make sense. *Or could it be the handful of snack-size butterfingers that I suddenly devoured without reason? Amanda, Jenny, Lena---I know you've all gone through this, so bear with the newbie on board!

We went to the Oregon State game vs Washington State yesterday and had a great time. The beavs DEMOLISHED WSU, but in my opinion, they went a little overboard at 66-13. The weather was nice, clear but crisp at 55-60 degrees, just as it is today. These days are numbered, for I can smell the constant Pacific NW rains 'a comin'. Tech is already forming his own paths of mud in the yard from running end-to-end while the neighbor kids are out. Goodbye mud-free kitchen floors!

I broke out the crock pot today, and the aroma of a wine-broth-covered pot roast is taking over the whole house (all 1100 sq-feet of it). Yet another sign of fall... my appetite for rich food increases, my eagerness to take Tech on long walks decreases, and my fat jeans make a resurgence from the back of the closet. Ahhh, what a life. :)

Just for fun, my pot roast recipe (one I found on the 'net):

Drunken Garlic Pot Roast

Ingredients:
2 1/2 lbs boneless beef chuck roast, trimmed of fat
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
12-24 garlic cloves, minced (about 4 tbsp.) ----yes! this is the correct amount!adjust to your taste, though.
2 beef bouillon cubes
1/2 cup hot water
8 ounces lager beer or your favorite red drinking wine, whichever suits your fancy
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
cornstarch (dissolved in water, for gravy)

Directions:
1. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoons of the oil and brown roast on both sides, seasoning with salt and pepper; remove to a platter and keep warm.
2. Add the remaining tbsp of oil to the pan and add the onions, cook until they just start to wilt then add the garlic, them cook until the onions are tender, a few minutes more.
3. Add the bouillon cubes to the hot water and stir to dissolve; add that to the skillet along with the beer/wine, brown sugar, mustard, and vinegar; stir to mix well.
4. Pour mixture into the bottom of the crock pot.
5. Place roast on top of liquid, cutting into pieces if it doesn't lay flat.
6. Set the crock pot on low and cook for 7-8 hours.
7. Remove meat from crock pot and pour liquid into a pan on the stove; heat to a boil, and mix a slurry out of the cornstarch and water; thicken pan liquid with slurry to make a gravy.
8. Serve gravy over meat or with potatoes or noodles.

You can toss in some root veggies (potatoes, carrots, parsnips, etc..), but I like to serve with baked potatoes or chunky garlic mashed potatoes. Yummy! (If you try it, tell me how you liked it!)

I got grillz

Last Wednesday, I went back to the dentist to get started on my Invisalign treatment. They did new x-rays, took close-up digital pics of my teeth from all angles, and made molds of my teeth. It took 2 tries on both upper and lower molds....each one was held firmly on my teeth (with my mouth wide open) for 5 minutes. The first didn't work because the plastic material didn't surround my teeth all the way. I personally didn't think the process was as bad as other people on the 'net have talked about. So now, all I can do is wait until they call me back with the Clincheck (computerized pictorial of my teeth going through invisalign treatment) to make sure the end result they have projected is what I want. Hopefully, they'll call me in by the end of next week! The only down side is the addition of another monthly payment to the list of bills we already have.....

Daily to-dos

Invisalign

So I have wanted straighter teeth for YEARS...and because I'm such a vain person, metal braces really were never on my "maybe" list. I went in last Monday for an Invisalign consultation with a local dentist, and he thinks it would be a great treatment option for my needs. Here's what Invisalign is all about.

So I get to go in Wednesday to have my teeth molded, get awful pictures taken from all directions, and hand over a cool $500 first payment to get things rolling. The dentist sends all my info to Invisalign and they develop a computer-generated guesstimate of the way my teeth will look throughout the process. When I and my dentist approve of the pictures, sets of trays are molded, and I wear one set for two weeks, move on to the next set until my teeth are where I want them to be. My insurance covers 60% (that's the biggest reason why I'm following through with this).

The biggest change will be brushing, flossing, rinsing, and cleaning the trays every time I eat something (no, you don't eat with them on). That's a lot of work, especially while I'm AT work. Apparently, most people who do Invisalign lose 5-15 lbs because they don't snack as much. Yippee! I could use some help in that area. :)

Our router went bad....no router, no wireless laptop service, no Stacia on laptop = no blogs. Even though we have a PC in the office. I am really laptop dependent. Glen couldn't wait for Verizon to send us a new one so I'd get off his back.
I never realized how much time I wasted just surfing the 'net....Things are going to change.

On another note, fall is officially here in the Pacific Northwest. I officially had to break out the down comforter 2 nights ago, and it was dark by 6pm lastnight. My patients are concerned with being able to rake the leaves in their yards. Boo-hoo. The rains are sure to follow.

My own personal Mr. Clean...but with hair

I really, really, really love my husband. He has every Wednesday off work because he works 10 hours, 4 days per week. We have out of town visitors coming on Friday, and he spent all day today mowing/trimming the yard, Preparing the guest room, vaccuming cars and the house...and he even scrubbed the bathroom floor! What a lucky gal I am to have a husband who likes a clean house and loves to clean more than I do! Actually, I hate it with a passion.

Love ya, babe.

Addicted to "Rock Band"

So my sister-in-law's boyfriend has the Playstation 3 game Rock Band...and I'm addicted. Who knew that a tried-and-true flute player in the good ol' days would turn out to be a kick-ass (virtual reality) drummer? The one downfall is that the front of my right shin starts to spasm from pressing the bass pedal. Good thing we don't have this game at our house!

Our next door neighbors had a "Napoleon Dynamite" party lastnight, and we were invited! They served quesadillas, tater tots, 1% milk, and root beer floats (if you haven't seen the movie, all of these foods make a cameo). They put up a large screen in their backyard, projected the movie onto it, and we all watched it from comfy lounge chairs/air mattresses/blankets after sunset. The movie is WAY more funny when you've seen it more than once and when there are more than 2 people watching at once. We had a great time!

P.S. Trying for baby in December! (Hi my bestest friend Amanda! I bet that is the news you want to hear!) Nobody tell my in-laws, though. I want it to be a surprise!

Common Sense: becoming extinct

Whew, it's been a long week! I don't know if it's something in the air...perhaps the coming change of season...but I have gotten way too many patients lately that seem to be 5 pennies short of a nickel. Example:

Me: So how are you today?

Patient: Well, my shoulder has been flared up since yesterday. I think the exercise you made me do irritated it.

Me: Well, it's been 3 days since I saw you last. Did you have pain after you left here?

Patient: No, actually I felt pretty good.

Me: Did you do anything else that could have irritated it, like housework?

Patient: No, but yesterday I did sand and paint 6 pieces of 4x6 ft plywood pieces, but that surely didn't do it, did it? I think it was what you did.

Silently to myself: "NO, you're just a freaking IDIOT lady!"

Just looking to place the blame onto anyone but herself.
Since when did society change from being hard-working, honest, decent people to idiots who don't OWN their own actions, who blame others for their problems, and SUE other people "to get justice"? I just don't understand it. Yes, I am on a soap box right now. I do consider myself to be a kind, understanding, PATIENT P.T., but it is becoming more and more difficult to want to help someone who could care less about helping themselves. It is my job day in and day out to educate people on what to do/what not to do to manage pain, increase mobility; what I cannot do is control whether or not the patient follows through. I probably spend 2 out of 8 daily work hours having conversations such as the one above. People don't get it.

Glen's Surprise Party

As some of you know, my hubby Glen just turned 30 this month, plus he rode in his first "Century" (in the cycling world, a 100-mile bike race) last Sunday the 24th. Since we were in Mexico over our birthdays, and with many fully-booked weekend plans, I ended up throwing him a surprise party on the 30th....to commemorate not only a milestone of a birthday, but a difficult physical achievement. I am VERY proud of him!
So about 15 of our closest family and friends (boo-hoo to Jenny who would rather work than party with my in-laws!) enjoyed a "Casino Night" theme, complete with blackjack, poker, chicken wings, beer, and homemade ice cream cake! We all must be getting old, because everyone was gone by 11! We had a great time, Glen was truly surprised, and we got to see a few people we haven't seen in a long time. Plus, no drinking games! A sign of the times.....

On another note, we decided to get up yesterday morning and go on a hike to Larch Mountain with our friends Megan and Jeff, and their dogs Hershey and Gustav. It was a cold 42 degrees up there--we took 2 trails for about 8 miles---and at the last mile, it started POURING DOWN RAIN. Nothing like the smell of wet dog in the car to keep you awake on the ride home!

Support Me in the Race for the Cure!

Please excuse the cut-and-paste plug, but:

Dear Friends and Family,
I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support the Komen Portland Race for the Cure® on September 21st in the fight to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
Did you know that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® locally helps to provide more than 7,000 free screening mammograms for the uninsured women of Oregon and SW Washington who otherwise cannot afford them? Unfortunately, 37,000 more local women need mammograms but don’t get them. That is why I am fundraising and joining this year’s Race, to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure save lives through early detection.
Imagine the impact…
Seventy-five percent of the dollars you donate will fund vital services across Oregon and SW Washington, while twenty-five percent will be combined with other Affiliates’ funds to fuel national breast cancer research at an unprecedented level.
$10 funds ten support booklets for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
$25 pays for a gas card for a low-income woman driving over 75 miles one way to get a mammogram.
$77 can fund a free screening mammogram for one uninsured woman
By making a donation in this year’s Race you can make a difference.
Click here to visit my personal page and pledge your support.
Click here to register and join me in this year's Race.
Thank you for joining in our promise to create a world without breast cancer!Sincerely,
Stacia

Mexico pics

A few pics....

Our room:

Outdoor shower (Glen's favorite!):

This is where we spent a majority of our days: our own private cabana!

Our first full day there, we were sent a tray of chocolate desserts and a full bottle of [yucky] tequila---Glen's GQ moment, enjoying the treats:

The [adult] pool, for select "platinum villa" guests only (we are such snobs, but why not? no kids yet!)

A view of the beach! Glen couldn't help but take this picture due to the topless woman (just on the other side of the guy in the bottom right chair). Look closely, they're there! And they weren't the only ones! Yes, kiddos running around everywhere, too.

5th street in Playa del Carmen:

Couldn't help but post this one: There were many platforms all over the property like this one that had statues on top. We decided to pose ourselves.... At one point, Glen said,
"Get on your knees, I wanna try something."
Me: "You wish!"
Random group of people walking by: "Haaa Haaa haaaaa!!!!!"

Us after dinner on the first night:

We had so much fun!

too lazy to post

So we made it back from Mayheeko last Sunday...we both brought back nice tans (the kind where freckles converge to LOOK like a tan), and I brought back a stomach ache and a fever blister on my bottom lip that developed Monday morning. NOT fun. Still healing.

I got our underwater camera pictures developed (and they did not turn out well), and the rest of our pics are still on the digital. Chalk it up to laziness and the dreadful reality of returning to work that I don't care to download any of them right now. Just catching up on Project Runway...
More to come!

Officially on Vacation!!

Plane leaves at 7 am, so that means we're at the airport at 5:30, up at 4:30-ish. I still have to finish packing, clean out the fridge, vacuum up dog hair (love ya, Tech), wash towels for the house sitter....who knew going on vacation was such hard work?!
By this time tomorrow, we'll be (hopefully) enjoying a fresh margarita on the beach. At last, I can catch up on some reading!

shame, shame

Shame on me...almost a month without posting. I really have no excuse besides finding yet ANOTHER thing that I procrastinate about...like cleaning the bathroom (which I dread doing, but it gets done weekly!), going to the gym, folding laundry. Sometimes I wonder why in the world I couldn't wait to grow up fast...I'd gladly revert back to cleaning my room, doing the dishes, and going on my merry way.

We went to see The Dark Knight yesterday with Aaron and Amanda (sis-in-law), and I thought it was great! What a shame that Heath Ledger is no longer with us. I think he did some of his best acting in this movie.

We're leaving for Mexico on Friday! The forecast looks sunny/rainy daily, but I'm hoping it's just short, lovely, cool showers that soothe our pale, Irish skin from the hot Mexican sun. Knock on wood that no pesky hurricanes develop in the Atlantic in the next 2 weeks.

Now we're off to the in-laws' for an early birthday celebration. I'm turning 28 and Glen's turning 30 on the 11th (for those of you who don't know, we do have the same birthday), and we'll obviously be in Mexico then.

This will be a very momentous trip because it may be our last big vacation before---(yay!)------B-A-B-Y plans?? As we have learned, though, so tragically with a few close friends, just because you plan for one does NOT equal actually getting one within your time frame.....

Post Holiday Blues

The worst thing about having a 3-day weekend is the reality of Monday! It's not bad, though.

We had a great time this weekend...one of Glen's college buddies, Matt, stayed with us Thursday through Sunday, along with his girlfriend Laurel. It was our first time meeting Laurel, and she was/is such a sweetheart! They both live in the TriCities Washington area and were looking to "party it up" with the "city folk". Heh. I guess if that's what they think we are, I won't tell them any different! We took them on a tour of the Historic Columbia River Highway to see the many falls, including Multnomah Falls (where Glen and got engaged), then we spent the evening at Cascade Locks to drink, laze around, and watch the firework show. Pretty uneventful, but fun!

Then we went to Portland's Saturday Market on.....of all days...Saturday morning. :) I picked up a cheap knock-off pair of sunglasses for Mexico (32 days and counting!), they contemplated buying a bong (just kidding, but they do sell them there), and we had Dim Sum just down the street. Later that night we went to Rheinlander's for German food:

We stuffed ourselves! We stopped at Portland City Grill afterwards for cocktails and a beautiful panoramic view of Portland, then headed home. They left yesterday...I wish they lived closer!
There was no fun after that--laundry, yardwork, housecleaning--and when kids come, it's gonna get so much worse. Oy.

Smog, anyone?

What a way to start off the summer...enveloped in a cloud of smoke-laden haze from the fires in California. Global warming at its best.

It's been a good, uneventful week. Spoke to my mom ( who is more like a child than my parent), bought some new sheets at the new Home Goods store on airport way (like a Ross store, only a little less crowded and a little more upscale), and getting ready for weekend guests. We lead a VERY eventful life. :)

Mexico countdown

Whew, what a Monday! Work is busy (so many patients, no time to document!), the superdog needed a good walk, and my a$$ is so sore from weeding yesterday that it hurts to sit. But, one upside---it's finally looking like summer around here! We actually have a forecast full of sunshine and 90-degree days(woo hooo! no rain!). At least this time of the year, meteorologists have a faint idea of what the week will look like since there's NOTHING on radar.

All of this sunshine makes me think of Mexico! We are officially at 6 weeks and 4 days until we leave (for safety's sake, I won't pinpoint where exactly we're going) for the Caribbean side. 10 days, 9 nights of adulterated fun. :)

Anybody have a fave tropical drink I should try while I'm there?

Oh, the fun of home ownership

We love it. It's great. We no longer have a reason to bang the broomstick on the ceiling, climb up 2 flights of stairs to bring in groceries, and no one parking next to our cars (leaving multiple dings in the process). How did we survive in an apartment for so long?

Before home ownership, Glen: "I can't wait to have our own yard to mow, take care of plants, barbecue, do whatever we want."

After home ownership:

"Damn, I've got to mow the lawn again! That shit grows like crazy!"

Our backyard needed a little TLC today, so we spent about 2 hours weeding flower beds, pruning, and another 3 hours replacing our birdbath, planting new flowers, putting out barkdust. Here's what our superdog Tech did:

Boy, has he got it made. Here is part of our backyard, for those of you who haven't seen it:

(That pile of potting soil is where the birdbath goes.)

Anyway, things went well. We can't complain (much). If only we could have bought the house in the middle of July to know that our neighbor to the back of us has a lawn so large that he only mows the 1/2 closest to his house...we get to enjoy the 6-foot tall "native grasses" that so conveniently leave their spawn to blow into the wind and establish their seeds in our flower beds...arghhhh. Did I mention the fact that our fence is slatted cedar, which allows growth in between slats? Seriously, it looks like we should be sprouting corn any day now...

(see to the far right)

This also displays one of the FEW disadvantages to owning a male dog....shrub burnout!

My First Blog

So I'm taking the plunge in starting my first blog! I've gotten to the point where I've silently told myself that I need to "reach out and touch someone" and allow my family and friends a bird's eye view into my life. Welcome! Hopefully it's worth your time. Ala cuisine! (Sorry, Iron Chef reference there. Get used to it!)
